No One Knows God
No one who thinks they are a body, or a mind, Knows God. No one here Knows Truth. To Know God or Truth means to not know you, to know you’re not here, to not be dreaming, to be beyond the split-mind. So when we say, as Course students, “I know the Truth”, or “I know God”, what we’re really saying (if true) is that I (a decision maker — which is an illusion) know Jesus or the Holy Spirit (my right mind — which is also an illusion).
This is not Truth.
It’s little “t” truth within the illusion, and it’s the truth that points us to Truth through the use of symbols, but it’s still illusory truth, and all the symbols are illusory. Some of the symbols reflect Truth (Jesus/Holy Spirit/ decision maker), and some of them reflect separation (ego, individuality, mindlessness, special relationships). As long as we seem to be bound by dreams, however, it is symbols we must deal with (because everything which is not Truth is a symbol) as this is the only way to remember Home. There are no other toys to play with other than the decision maker, the right mind, and the wrong mind. There are certainly many different toys, and arrangements of toys (paths), but toys are all we have as little children (metaphor for anyone who thinks they are not Christ).
The Course uses symbols for the purpose of connecting to a process within ourselves that is universal. It’s only by understanding and experiencing this process that we can then do something about it — namely, ask the Holy Spirit’s help with it. And this process takes place entirely within the mind, but we experience it as a seeming body. (The above paragraph has some Ken Wapnick mixed in with my own words.)
“This course remains within the ego framework, where it is needed. it is not concerned with what is beyond all error because it is planned only to set the direction toward it. Therefore it uses words, which are symbolic, and cannot express what lies beyond symbols.” (C-in.3:1-3).
The Course literally couldn’t be concerned with Truth, because….
“Truth has no meaning in illusion. The frame of reference for its meaning must be itself. When you try to bring truth to illusions, you are trying to make illusions real, and keep them by justifying your belief in them. But to give illusions to truth is to enable truth to teach that the illusions are unreal, and thus enable you to escape from them.” (T-17.I.5:2-5).
We are using symbols to move beyond all symbols. Until we have moved beyond symbols, the only truth we know is that we are a decision making mind, and we are happier when we choose to join with the Holy Spirit. The decision maker can know the Holy Spirit, but it cannot Know God.
