Where We Two First Parted
This is a poem I wrote a long time ago; circa 1993, I think. I was still fairly new to the course, so it wouldn’t reflect its thought system perfectly. In fact, I wrote it after a fleeting picture in my barely awakening mind evoked within me a powerful experience of peace. Within a few seconds I picked up a pen to express what I had seen and felt. The words came easily, and I was done in about 15 minutes. It’s not the greatest poem ever written, but it has meaning to me since it reminds me of one of the first experiences of my innocence.
where we two first parted
there is a pool of Love
infinitely vast and deep
that shimmers just beyond
our pale imaginings
where you and I cavort and play
in its warmth and protection
and swim in a velvet dream
under a silken moon
that shines and glimmers
upon the tip of each dancing ripple
in a blissful caress
that reaches past understanding
and into a long forgotten place
of serenity and joyful contentedness
where words and sounds and thoughts
coalesce
and fade
in the unfathomable depths
of a union so profound
and all-encompassing
that a billion billion kindred souls
like our own
release and dissolve
into the One formless dominion
from whence they came,
safe in surrender
and rapturous in the truth
that forever nurtures us
in its loving embrace.
